Police Clash With Protesters Outside Confederation Cup Football Final in Brazil

Protesters have clashed with police near Rio’s Maracana stadium, minutes before the start of the Brazil-Spain final of the Confederations Cup, AFP reported.

Al Jazeera’s Adam Raney reporting from Rio de Janeiro, after the match had begun, said that clashes had died down.

Earlier, some 5,000 people sang and danced to samba music as they marched towards the stadium, before being blocked by a police security cordon on Sunday.

The marchers responded to calls on social media to turn out to back the national squad but also to protest the country’s inadequate public services – a key gripe at the core of two weeks of demonstrations that have rocked the South American giant.

More than 11,000 police and troops were mobilised to ensure security for 78,000 fans at the Maracana arena as the curtain falls on a tournament hit by the unprecedented social unrest, with more than 1.5 million Brazilians taking to the streets nationwide over the past two weeks.

Our correspondent said the protests were likely to continue, though it was unclear what the protesters would direct their energy at with the football tournament now being wrapped up.

Public anger

“We are against the privatisation of the stadium and forced housing displacement, linked to the 2014 World Cup and the (2016 Rio summer) Olympics,” said Renato Cosentino, a spokesman for one of the groups sponsoring Saturday’s protest.

Hundreds of demonstrators also rallied in the Tijuca district, about one mile from Maracana, dancing and chanting: “FIFA, pay my (bus) fare” or “Maracana is ours.”

Police invited the country’s Bar Association as well as federal and state prosecutors to monitor their security deployment following charges of police brutality during earlier protests.

A small demonstration was also held in the northeastern city of Salvador outside the stadium where Italy took third place in the Confederations Cup on Sunday after beating Uruguay 3-2 on penalties.

Protesters complain the government has found billions of dollars to build brand new stadiums for 12 World Cup host stadiums while transport, education and health remain underfunded.

President Dilma Rousseff, whose popularity has plunged since the start of the unrest, will not attend the Spain-Brazil final.

Two weeks ago, she and FIFA President Sepp Blatter were booed by demonstrators at the opening game of the tournament in Brasilia.

Dallas Mining Company Executives Found Dead in Rio Santa Rio

Image Two men, reportedly the CEO and CFO of U.S.-based exploration firm Southridge Minerals found dead.

According to several local media outlets, their bodies were found dead floating down Rio Santa Rosa river by local farmers, on the border between the municipalities of Ixtlan del Rio, Nayarit and Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco., local press reports

The bodies, corresponding to two men in their late 30s, were found by farmers of Ixtlan del Rio who were working their land near Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco. They also recovered a briefcase with documents revealing the names of Michel Davies and Derald Johnston, which are the names of Southridge Minerals’s CEO and CFO. The farmers said however, were forensic experts of Nayarit took bodies because they were in state territory.

The company has been involved in a recent controversy over its rights over the Cinco Minas project. The conflict worsened early this month, after a Canadian junior released an independent report revealing that Southridge’s Cinco Minas property has been non-operational for the past several years.

On February 5, Bandera Gold CEO Stephen Roehrig  released a statement claiming  “press releases issued by Southridge Enterprises, Inc. (‘SRGE’ or ‘Southridge’) contain false and misleading statements about current mining activity and SRGE’s alleged ownership of the Cinco Minas project.”This followed the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s announcement on December 28 that it had “temporarily suspended trading in the securities of Southridge because of questions regarding the accuracy of statements made by Southridge in press releases to investors concerning, among other things, the company’s business operations and arrangements.

Despite the U.S. company allegedly claiming the contrary, Canada’s Bandera Gold (TSXV:BGL) published a detailed report with photos and videos showing evidence the site and machinery have been “completely non-operational for some time.”

The Dallas-based firm, however, says in its website that it paid $7.5 million for exclusive concessions to mine the Cinco Minas and Gran Cabrera sites respectively located 100 and 135 kilometers northwest of Guadalajara in 2010. This fact is disputed by Bandera Gold, which claims ownership of both mines and displays the concession certificates on its website.

Bodyguard Goes Missing in Uganda

Bodyguard disappears after receiving a phone call at an exclusive party in Uganda.
Bodyguard disappears after receiving a phone call at an exclusive party in Uganda.

Friends and relatives to Michael Kasirye, socialite Zari Hassan’s former bodyguard have reported a case of a missing person with Jinja road police station. Kalisimaati as he was fondly called by pals was last seen at Zari’s All White Party at Guvnor last year.

“It’s over a month now since we last heard of Michael and to make matters worse, all his known lines are off,” a family source said. Kalisimaati used to work at the Centenary based BBQ Lounge until November 2012.

Kalisimaati was one of Zari’s most trusted bouncers, but during the night of the White Party, he received a call which he had to attend to from a less noisy area, so he chose to go outside the dancing hall. That was the last time he was seen until today.

Police is now appealing to whoever has any information leading to his whereabouts to come out and help as they carry out investigations in the hunt for Michael Kasirye.

Zari and Ivan left the country this morning after a four-day visit that saw Zari stock her Garden City based stores with Valentine wear and assorted gift items.

Investigations intensify against Ukrainian presidential bodyguard accused of espionage

diplomat protection, diplomatic security

KIEV, January 9 – RAPSI, Alexander Savochenko. The  Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office has submitted materials in a  criminal case pending against the former bodyguard of ex-Ukrainian  President Leonid Kuchma for further investigation, Melnichenko’s  attorney Mykola Nedilko told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

Melnichenko stands accused of disclosing state secrets.

“An investigator told me that the case has been submitted for further  investigation as it is thought that the pre-trial investigation was  incomplete. It was returned to the investigation stage as there were few  counts against Melnichenko in the case,” Nedilko said.

The Ukrainian authorities closed the investigation into the criminal  case against Melnichenko in late December and submitted the indictment  to the prosecutor general’s office for approval.

Melnichenko was detained at the Boryspil International Airport on  October 24 and taken into custody afterwards. He was charged with the  disclosure of state secrets, abuse of power, and falsification of  evidence.

The bodyguard became widely known after he recorded the voice of an  individual who sounded like Kuchma giving orders in the presidential  office to “settle affairs” with journalist Georgy Gongadze, whose  beheaded body was later found in the Kiev Region in autumn 2000.

As a result, Kuchma was accused of involvement in the murder. However,  the court ruled that the case against him did not hold, as the recording  had been made illegitimately.

While living in the US, Melnichenko claimed that he had audio recordings  that could prove former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s involvement  in the assassination of Ukrainian businessman and politician Yevheny  Shcherban at the Donetsk airport in 1996.

Gujarat poll shooting: BJP MLA’s bodyguard goes berserk, replies with bullets to stones

indiamap

The bodyguard of a BJP candidate and sitting MLA opened fire after some stones were pelted at the leader by some people in Tarsang village, resulting in the injury to four of them.

Jetha Bharwad, the MLA from Sahera in Panchmahal district and seeking a re-election, was later detained, DGP Chittranjan Singh said.

According to Panchmahal SP Sachin Badshah, “When Bharwad reached Tarsang village, suddenly some stone were pelted on him. His commando retaliated and opened 8-10 rounds of fire in which four people were injured, though they all are out of danger now,” he said.

Tarsang village is around 165 km from here.

Police detained Bharwad while he was still undergoing treatment for head injuries at a private hospital in Godhra town of Panchmahal.

“At present, Jetha Bharwad is under detention and further probe is underway to ascertain who exactly fired, Bharwad or his commando,” said Singh.

Meanwhile Congress candidate Takhatsingh Solanki, who is pitted against Bharwad from Sahera, claimed that Bharwad came to the village for bogus voting and that he staged the stone pelting.

“It was pre-planned by Jetha Bharwad so that he can terrorise the voters of my village and resort to bogus voting. Otherwise he has no business to enter in my village at the time of voting,” Solanki claimed.

Saudi Diplomat, Bodyguard Shot Dead In Yemeni Capital

A Saudi diplomat working in neighboring Yemen and his local bodyguard were shot dead on Wednesday in the Yemeni capital Sana, reports quoting the Saudi Embassy and local security officials said.

Khalid AL-Nazi, the assistant military attaché at the Saudi embassy, and his security assistant, were  attacked near the Saudi official’s residence in Bait Bataan district, a southern suburb of the capital near Hadar district, in the morning.

The gunmen, reportedly disguised as members of the security services, chased Nazi’s car before opening fire, and the vehicle flipped as the driver tried to escape.

Hadar is a high-security region, hosting foreign embassies and diplomatic residences.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the second similar incident in as many months targeting foreign diplomats in Yemeni capital.

Al-QED in the Arabian Peninsula (ASAP) was suspected to have carried out the killing of a security official at the U.S. Embassy in Sana in October.   Saudi Arabia’s official news agency Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said “the Yemeni security authorities in collaboration with the Saudi ambassador to Yemen have already started investigation to know the circumstances and motives behind the crime and to bring the offenders to justice.” The Saudi Foreign Ministry is preparing to bring the body of its diplomat to the kingdom, SPA added.

Americans Shot in Mexico Were C.I.A. Operatives Aiding in Drug War

We waited to post anything about this story until more details came out. But it appears to be what we suspected.. Another Star on the wall in Langley…
This Article is from the New York Times Published August 28th, 2012
By and
MEXICO CITY — The two Americans who were wounded when gunmen fired on an American Embassy vehicle last week were Central Intelligence Agency employees sent as part of a multiagency effort to bolster Mexican efforts to fight drug traffickers, officials said on Tuesday.

The two operatives, who were hurt on Friday, were participating in a training program that involved the Mexican Navy. They were traveling with a Mexican Navy captain in an embassy sport utility vehicle that had diplomatic license plates, heading toward a military shooting range 35 miles south of the capital when gunmen, some or all of them from the Federal Police, attacked the vehicle, Mexican officials have said.

The Mexican Navy said Tuesday in a statement that an American was driving the vehicle and that during the attack the captain, who was handling logistics and translating for the men, remained in the back seat calling

for help on his cellphone.

The men were wounded, the Navy said, when the rain of bullets managed to tear through the car’s protective armor. It was unclear if the Americans, who officials said were unarmed, were specifically targeted, if the shooting was a case of mistaken identity or if there was some other reason that the vehicle was ambushed. Mexican prosecutors have detained 12 federal police officers and have said no theory can be ruled out.

The C.I.A. declined to comment. But American officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information, said no evidence had emerged so far that the Americans were targeted because of their affiliation.

American investigators are working with Mexican authorities to determine what happened and whether the police officers involved were corrupt.

The notion that a squad of federal police officers would attack an embassy car could be another blow to the developing trust and cooperation between American counternarcotics personnel and their Mexican partners.

Through programs like the $1.6-billion Merida Initiative, the United States has spent millions of dollars on training and equipping the federal police.

Eric Olson, an expert at the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Mexico Institute in Washington, said the shooting could only sow some doubts about the police, and at best pointed to a lack of communication among Mexico’s military and the police.

“This seems to suggest there isn’t better communication between the various elements of the Mexican government,” he said. “One fundamental issue is the lack of trust.”

In his first public comments on the shooting, President Felipe Calderón, speaking Tuesday at a security forum attended by the American ambassador, Anthony Wayne, promised a thorough investigation.

“Be it from negligence, lack of training, lack of trust, complicity, these acts cannot be permitted and they are being investigated absolutely rigorously,” Mr. Calderón said.

The presence of C.I.A. employees, and indeed all American operatives, on Mexican soil has long been a prickly subject here.

In his nearly six years in office, Mr. Calderón has allowed a much larger role for American counternarcotics operations, including the use of unarmed American drones deep in Mexican territory. C.I.A. operatives and retired American military personnel have also worked with American law enforcement agencies and the Mexican military on training and intelligence-gathering.But Mexico has ruled out allowing the Americans to carry out arrests or deploy troops on its soil, and even their limited role has provoked a political outcry over whether the nation’s sovereignty has been put in jeopardy.

Lawmakers, instigated by the left, have hauled Mexican government officials before Congress for sometimes testy hearings and after the newspaper La Jornada first reported the C.I.A. involvement on Tuesday, some politicians said they would ask for a thorough explanation of the American role here.

“It’s is time to speak clearly and for us to know what institutions are intervening in what specific way in our country in regard to security,’ said Iris Vianey Mendoza, a senator from the left-leaning Party of the Democratic Revolution.

The office of Enrique Peña-Nieto, who won Mexico’s presidential election in July and has promised to maintain close ties with American law enforcement agencies, declined to comment.

The shooting was reminiscent of an attack on American immigration and customs agents last year in which one was fatally shot and another wounded when their embassy sport utility vehicle was ambushed on a highway north of Mexico City. A Mexican man was extradited and is awaiting trial on murder charges in Washington.

This latest episode has caused Mexicans to reflect on the quality of the federal police force, which had achieved growing respect but which has been tarnished by recent corruption scandals.

“The thing that really worries me,” said Gabriel Guerra, a political analyst who has worked with the three major parties here, “is that we are seeing the unraveling of what was supposed to be the main achievement in the fight against organized crime, which was the creation of a trustworthy national police.”

Billionaire Security: Behind the scenes with Warren Buffett’s Bodyguard.

Warren Buffett’s bodyguard punched me in the head, and it hurt.

Warren Buffett and his bodyguard, Dan Clark
Warren Buffett and his bodyguard, Dan Clark

The bodyguard, Dan Clark, didn’t mean for it to hurt, he was just demonstrating a fighting move called the brachial stun. That’s a strike to the side of the neck using a chopping motion with the hands — but when Clark hit me with it in a slow speed demonstration, the sudden burst of force whipped my whole head to the right, crashing my teeth together so hard that I thought I would lose a filling.

That’s what Dan Clark is like — even his demonstrations are intense.

He’s the kind of guy who throws around phrases like the “muay Thai clench with a double knee strike,” and who, when he emails you to invite you to his training session, reminds you politely to bring a cup.

All of it — the gym, the training, and especially the punch — combine to send a clear message: Don’t mess with Buffett, or any of Clark’s other clients. And that’s kind of the point.

The gym we’re standing in is attached to the offices of his company, Clark International, in Omaha, Neb. Clark, with his square build and close cropped red hair, looks every inch the former Omaha police officer he once was.

But then he met Warren Buffett, the billionaire investor known as the Oracle of Omaha, and in 1995 became Buffett’s go-to guy for personal security. When you see Buffett walking the floor at his annual investor conference, Clark is usually positioned just to Buffett’s side — keeping the crowd from surging too close to the elderly billionaire, and making sure the camera crews don’t trample anybody.

Such close proximity to an icon of American business inspired an entrepreneurial instinct in Clark, so he founded his own security company. Today, Clark International provides security services for high profile people including former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and actor George Clooney, along with a list of others he declines to name.

We flew to Nebraska to spend some time with him this spring, during a two-day executive training session Clark had organized for dozens of full- and part-time security guards. Only a handful are full-time employees. The rest are contractors on call for big jobs that require more bodies on the ground.

The men — and one woman — clearly respect the man who’s training them, occasionally clobbering them, and who may just sign their next pay check. Two or three are veterans of the mixed martial arts fighting circuit. But even they call Clark “sir.”

Bodyguard Killed in Ambush

MANILA, Philippines – A board member in San Pablo, Laguna was wounded while his driver was killed in an ambush Wednesday evening, police said on Thursday.

Superintendent Romeo de Castro, chief of police, said board member Reynaldo dela Torre Paras, 55, was wounded, and his bodyguard-driver, Geovanni Legaspi Dumaraos was declared dead on arrival at the hospital after they were attacked along A. Bonifacio Street in Barangay VII-C in San Pablo City, Laguna at around 8:20 p.m.

But de Castro said one of two gunmen identified as Eugene Rocaldo Bacoto, 25, was also wounded after Paras managed to return fire at the suspects.

De Castro said that Paras, 55, came from Sta Cruz town and had stopped by a bakery on his way home in San Pablo City when they were attacked.

“(Paras) was standing in front of a bakery when he was attacked. I knew he used to buy bread from that bakeshop to take home to his wife,” De Castro said.

The two gunmen, he said, appeared to have been waiting for Paras as they had positioned themselves about five meters from the official when they opened

“We just couldn’t say yet if it was Paras or the bodyguard who shot Bacoto,” said De Castro, as the police were still waiting for results of ballistic tests.

Bacoto was arrested when police arrived at the scene, but the other gunman escaped.

Shortly after the attack,  the escaped gunman stole  a motorcycle nearby and used it to get away, abandoning the vehicle near the noundary between San Pablo City and the town of Alaminos, Laguna police director Senior Supt. Gilbert Cruz said.

The man could have also been wounded as police found blood on the motorcycle, Cruz added.

Cruz said Paras had dropped by the provincial police headquarters in Sta Cruz Wednesday afternoon to report he had been getting threats.

“He said he had been receiving threats on his life,” Cruz said, declining to give more details as an   investigation was ongoing.

Bacoto, who remained in the hospital under heavy police guard, refused to name the mastermind of the  attack, according to De Castro.

Paras, who represents the third district of Laguna on the Provincial Board, heads the committee on peace and order. He was police officer before he entered politics.

Supreme Court Judge & Bodyguard Shot in Nepal

KATHMANDU — Gunmen on a motorbike shot and killed a Nepalese Supreme Court judge on Thursday in the capital Kathmandu, sparking fears of lawlessness amid a political vacuum in the Himalayan country.

Judge Rana Bahadur Bam, who was under investigation for corruption, was being driven from a temple early in the day when the gunmen pounced, shooting him six times and injuring two others in the car, doctors and police said.

“He and a security guard were returning from Bagalamukhi temple. A motorbike blocked their way and there was gunfire at 11:08 am,” said Kathmandu police spokesman Rabi Raj Shrestha.

“He succumbed to multiple bullet wounds in his armpit. We will interrogate the (judge’s) driver to find out more,” said Shrestha.

The shooting punctured an uneasy peace in the capital, days after Nepal’s Constituent Assembly, which had been considering the case for Bam’s impeachment, disbanded having failed to agree on a new constitution.

The killing came as thousands of police patrolled the streets while feuding political factions vie for power in the troubled Himalayan nation, which has no legislature and only a caretaker government ahead of elections in November.

“The Nepal government will find the criminal. I urge all Nepalis not to be filled with terror,” caretaker Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai said after visiting the hospital where Bam was taken.

“A high-level meeting of security committee has been called,” Bhattarai told reporters outside the hospital. “We will provide extra security to all the high-level officials including judges.”

Bam, a Supreme Court justice for four years, was suspended from hearing cases after being accused of taking bribes in return for giving lenient sentences to criminals.

He was under investigation by the Judiciary Council and was due to retire in a year.

Nilama Pandey, a doctor at the Norvick Hospital where Bam was taken, said the 64-year-old had been shot six times and had been pronounced dead soon after being admitted.

“He had injuries on his chest. He died after bleeding profusely. Unfortunately, we could not save him,” Pandey told local television.

His bodyguard and a friend who was also in the car, Ram Giri, the father of popular Nepali comedian Deepak Raj Giri, were also shot but their lives are not in danger, Pandey added.

Bystanders told local television channels the gunshots rung out above the noise of traffic in the morning rush hour.

“We were working when we heard a huge noise. There were three of us and we rushed to the scene. Blood had splattered on the road. We didn’t see how the two gunmen arrived but they left on a motorbike,” one said.

A pamphlet from a previously unknown group calling itself the Nepal Vad Party was found at the scene, in the Lalitpur district, Shrestha added.

Security analyst Saroj Raj Adhikari told AFP the shooting came at a time of “confusion and uncertainty” in Nepal because of the country’s political crisis.

“The murder of the judge shows that no one is safe in the country,” he said. “If the current state continues, I think these groups are likely to commit more serious crimes,” he added.

Adhikari said criminal groups which emerged after the end of Nepal’s 1996-2006 civil war were finding it easier than ever to get hold of arms because of inadequate gun controls.

Shootings are still relatively rare in Kathmandu, however, although several public figures have recently been the target of gunmen with various motives and grievances.

In September last year, a Muslim community leader was shot dead in the centre of the capital, while five months earlier a Pakistani embassy official was shot in the hand and stomach but survived.

Bodyguard Cleared on Charges of Misconduct

ONE of Julia Gillard’s close bodyguards has been cleared of allegations he used the Prime Minister’s VIP plane to help run his private business.

An internal Australian Federal Police investigation found that the senior close personal protection officer carried model aircraft as part of his personal luggage on a flight from Brisbane to Canberra.

But he was cleared of allegations he may have seriously breached the AFP’s code of conduct by carrying these goods in the cargo hold of the PM’s plane.

The officer, who was initially contacted in January by the Daily Telegraph over the claims, operates a private business, Helipal Australia, which sells model helicopters through the internet.

The agency’s Professional Standards Unit examined whether the Canberra-based officer had “seriously breached … the AFP code of conduct by using an official aircraft to transport personal goods related to his secondary employment”.

The investigation lasted several months with the AFP telling the officer on March 29 that “you have not breached protocols” and had not abused his position.

“The model aircraft were within your personal luggage and accepted as part of your baggage for the return flight from Brisbane to Canberra,” said Superintendent Con Coutsolitis, Coordinator Investigations (National), in a minute to the officer.

The bodyguard is part of an elite team paid to take a bullet for the Prime Minister and other VIPs.
