Police Clash With Protesters Outside Confederation Cup Football Final in Brazil

Protesters have clashed with police near Rio’s Maracana stadium, minutes before the start of the Brazil-Spain final of the Confederations Cup, AFP reported.

Al Jazeera’s Adam Raney reporting from Rio de Janeiro, after the match had begun, said that clashes had died down.

Earlier, some 5,000 people sang and danced to samba music as they marched towards the stadium, before being blocked by a police security cordon on Sunday.

The marchers responded to calls on social media to turn out to back the national squad but also to protest the country’s inadequate public services – a key gripe at the core of two weeks of demonstrations that have rocked the South American giant.

More than 11,000 police and troops were mobilised to ensure security for 78,000 fans at the Maracana arena as the curtain falls on a tournament hit by the unprecedented social unrest, with more than 1.5 million Brazilians taking to the streets nationwide over the past two weeks.

Our correspondent said the protests were likely to continue, though it was unclear what the protesters would direct their energy at with the football tournament now being wrapped up.

Public anger

“We are against the privatisation of the stadium and forced housing displacement, linked to the 2014 World Cup and the (2016 Rio summer) Olympics,” said Renato Cosentino, a spokesman for one of the groups sponsoring Saturday’s protest.

Hundreds of demonstrators also rallied in the Tijuca district, about one mile from Maracana, dancing and chanting: “FIFA, pay my (bus) fare” or “Maracana is ours.”

Police invited the country’s Bar Association as well as federal and state prosecutors to monitor their security deployment following charges of police brutality during earlier protests.

A small demonstration was also held in the northeastern city of Salvador outside the stadium where Italy took third place in the Confederations Cup on Sunday after beating Uruguay 3-2 on penalties.

Protesters complain the government has found billions of dollars to build brand new stadiums for 12 World Cup host stadiums while transport, education and health remain underfunded.

President Dilma Rousseff, whose popularity has plunged since the start of the unrest, will not attend the Spain-Brazil final.

Two weeks ago, she and FIFA President Sepp Blatter were booed by demonstrators at the opening game of the tournament in Brasilia.

Bodyguard Goes Missing in Uganda

Bodyguard disappears after receiving a phone call at an exclusive party in Uganda.

Friends and relatives to Michael Kasirye, socialite Zari Hassan’s former bodyguard have reported a case of a missing person with Jinja road police station. Kalisimaati as he was fondly called by pals was last seen at Zari’s All White Party at Guvnor last year.

“It’s over a month now since we last heard of Michael and to make matters worse, all his known lines are off,” a family source said. Kalisimaati used to work at the Centenary based BBQ Lounge until November 2012.

Kalisimaati was one of Zari’s most trusted bouncers, but during the night of the White Party, he received a call which he had to attend to from a less noisy area, so he chose to go outside the dancing hall. That was the last time he was seen until today.

Police is now appealing to whoever has any information leading to his whereabouts to come out and help as they carry out investigations in the hunt for Michael Kasirye.

Zari and Ivan left the country this morning after a four-day visit that saw Zari stock her Garden City based stores with Valentine wear and assorted gift items.

City Councilor and Bodyguard killed in Laguna Ambush

Image

CAMP PACIANO RIZAL, Laguna – A reelectionist city councilor and his bodyguard were killed in an ambush by a lone gunman Wednesday afternoon in San Pablo City, less than two weeks before the official start of the election period.

San Pablo City councilor Edgardo Adajar, 55, and his close-in bodyguard, Ronaldo Leonardo, 40, were killed at around 4 p.m. in Barangay (village) Concepcion in the city, said Superintendent Carlos Barde, city police chief.

He said Adajar was dead on the spot while Leonardo died in the hospital three hours after the ambush.

The victims had just stepped out of a cockpit and were about to board the official’s sports utility vehicle when the gunman appeared from behind and shot them at close range, said Barde.

Adajar sustained gunshot wounds in the head and body while Leonardo succumbed to two gunshot wounds in the body.

“According to [Adajar’s] driver, the councilor was already down on the ground when the gunman fired the second shot [hitting Adajar in] the head,” Barde said.

He said it seemed that the gunman, who escaped on a motorcycle driven by another man, carefully planned and waited for his target to come out of the cockpit.

Senior Superintendent Pascual Munoz, Laguna police director, who immediately formed a special task group on the case, said they were pursuing several angles in the investigation.

Among the angles are politics and personal grudges against the councilor, who is also known as a “hard-hitting” anchorman of a local radio station.

Adajar headed the city council’s committee on budget and authored two resolutions that sparked opposition to the P900- and P740- million loan transactions of the city government in 2012.

Members of a civil society group on Friday called on the Commission on Elections to place San Pablo City under its watch for fear the killings of Adajar and Leonardo are just the start of a violent election in May.

But although considered a “high-profile case,” the police have yet to tag the ambush of councilor Edgardo Adajar as poll-related with the motive still undetermined.

Barde also noted that the election period has yet to start until January 13.

Gujarat poll shooting: BJP MLA’s bodyguard goes berserk, replies with bullets to stones

indiamap

The bodyguard of a BJP candidate and sitting MLA opened fire after some stones were pelted at the leader by some people in Tarsang village, resulting in the injury to four of them.

Jetha Bharwad, the MLA from Sahera in Panchmahal district and seeking a re-election, was later detained, DGP Chittranjan Singh said.

According to Panchmahal SP Sachin Badshah, “When Bharwad reached Tarsang village, suddenly some stone were pelted on him. His commando retaliated and opened 8-10 rounds of fire in which four people were injured, though they all are out of danger now,” he said.

Tarsang village is around 165 km from here.

Police detained Bharwad while he was still undergoing treatment for head injuries at a private hospital in Godhra town of Panchmahal.

“At present, Jetha Bharwad is under detention and further probe is underway to ascertain who exactly fired, Bharwad or his commando,” said Singh.

Meanwhile Congress candidate Takhatsingh Solanki, who is pitted against Bharwad from Sahera, claimed that Bharwad came to the village for bogus voting and that he staged the stone pelting.

“It was pre-planned by Jetha Bharwad so that he can terrorise the voters of my village and resort to bogus voting. Otherwise he has no business to enter in my village at the time of voting,” Solanki claimed.

Saudi Diplomat, Bodyguard Shot Dead In Yemeni Capital

A Saudi diplomat working in neighboring Yemen and his local bodyguard were shot dead on Wednesday in the Yemeni capital Sana, reports quoting the Saudi Embassy and local security officials said.

Khalid AL-Nazi, the assistant military attaché at the Saudi embassy, and his security assistant, were  attacked near the Saudi official’s residence in Bait Bataan district, a southern suburb of the capital near Hadar district, in the morning.

The gunmen, reportedly disguised as members of the security services, chased Nazi’s car before opening fire, and the vehicle flipped as the driver tried to escape.

Hadar is a high-security region, hosting foreign embassies and diplomatic residences.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the second similar incident in as many months targeting foreign diplomats in Yemeni capital.

Al-QED in the Arabian Peninsula (ASAP) was suspected to have carried out the killing of a security official at the U.S. Embassy in Sana in October.   Saudi Arabia’s official news agency Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said “the Yemeni security authorities in collaboration with the Saudi ambassador to Yemen have already started investigation to know the circumstances and motives behind the crime and to bring the offenders to justice.” The Saudi Foreign Ministry is preparing to bring the body of its diplomat to the kingdom, SPA added.

Search for Four Kidnapped Foreigners Oil Workers Continues after Suspected Pirate Attack

Nigerian security agencies have stepped up efforts to trace the four foreigners who were kidnapped when an oil company vessel was attacked off the country’s coast.

Suspected pirates stormed a vessel belonging to the Sea Trucks Group in the Gulf of Guinea, scene of a series of maritime attacks in recent months.

Two people were killed during the assault, which took place 35 nautical miles off Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta coastal region.

“We have intensified our search for the kidnappers and the abducted four foreigners,” said Nigerian Navy spokesman Commodore Kabir Aliyu.

A second official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said an investigation of the Gulf’s subsidiary creeks and waterways is also under way.

“We are leaving no stone unturned in our efforts to get back these four foreigners who were kidnapped aboard the vessel. We are redoubling our efforts,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Sea Trucks Group said the company’s main goal was the safe release of the hostages.

We are very focused on getting our crew back safely,” Corrie Van Kessel said.

Van Kessel confirmed the four people kidnapped were from Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia and Thailand.

Plagued

The Gulf of Guinea has been plagued by armed insurgency from militants in recent years, following widespread criticism of companies’ refusal to redistribute oil revenues among local communities.

From 2006 to 2009, armed gangs targeted a number of oil companies, leading to a fall of over 28 percent in the production of crude oil.

Despite a 2009 amnesty deal that reduced the violence, the region has seen a fresh rise in the number of reported pirate attacks in 2012.

In a report released in July, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) reported that 32 incidents of piracy had been recorded off the coasts of Benin, Nigeria and Togo in the first half of 2012, up from 25 in 2011.

An IMB official told AFP that armed assaults on vessels in the area are being been under-reported.

Many of the raids include “high levels of violence,” the IMB report added.

Ex-Bin Laden Bodyguard Living in Germany

They said the man, named only as Sami A., 36, had recruited young Muslims in the city of Bochum for “holy war” after spending time in Afghanistan and Pakistan before the September 11, 2001 attacks. Bin Laden, the al Qaeda leader, was killed in a U.S. commando raid on his Pakistan hideout last year.

“We know that Sami A. was in Afghanistan and Pakistan at the end of 2000 where he was believed to have been one of Osama bin Laden’s bodyguards,” a spokeswoman for Germany’s constitutional watchdog in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) said.

“Both the intelligence services and security services have had a close eye on him since 2004,” she added. “We consider him dangerous as he had been spreading extremist views in Germany while trying to radicalize young people.”

Sami A. has not been detained but has been required to report to Bochum police daily since 2006, a spokeswoman for the NRW interior ministry said.

German authorities have tried to deport Sami A. to his native Tunisia since 2006 because he is seen as a possible threat to national security, but not succeeded because he is married to a German woman and they have three children.

Two of Sami A.’s followers belong to a group of four accused of membership of an al Qaeda cell and charged in Germany with plotting an attack. They went on trial in July. Prosecutors said the four, aged between 20 and 30, had intended to stage a “sensational terror attack”.

German media reports said Sami A. had given religious classes in Bochum to the German-Iranian Amid C., 21, and German citizen Halil S., 28, who are suspected of handling the group’s communications with al Qaeda leaders abroad.

Germany has stepped up surveillance of Salafist Islamists – believed to number about 4,000 among the 4 million Muslims in the country – after they sought to hand out free copies of the Koran and clashed with police earlier this year.

Police raided scores of buildings across Germany on June 14 in a clampdown on Salafists suspected of plotting against the state. Salafists want to establish sharia (Islamic law) in Europe and police fear they are fuelling militancy among a small minority of socially alienated young Muslims in Germany.

But despite the prominence of Germany in the saga of al Qaeda due to Hamburg’s role as a base for three of the September 11 suicide airline hijackers, its indigenous militant scene is much smaller than that in Britain or France, security experts say.

Britain has been trying for more than a decade to deport Abu Qatada, a radical Muslim preacher of Palestinian origin and described by a Spanish judge as bin Laden’s “right-hand man in Europe”, to Jordan to face terrorism charges. His case remains mired in legal wrangling

Bodyguard Killed in Attack on Yemini Minister

ImageGunmen strafed the car of Yemeni information minister Ali Ahmed al-Amrani with bullets on Thursday, killing his bodyguard, but the official was not in the vehicle at the time, officials said.

“Armed men fired shots at the information minister’s car, killing his bodyguard,” a security official told AFP. “The minister, who was not in the car at the time of the attack, was apparently the attackers’ target.”

The assailants sprayed the car with bullets as it stopped outside a pharmacy.

A ministerial source confirmed the attack and the death of the bodyguard, whose name was not given.

Amrani also escaped an assassination attempt on January 31 as he was leaving government headquarters in Sanaa.

The minister, a member of the opposition named to the post in December as part of a deal that led to the resignation of President Ali Abdullah Saleh in February, was also unhurt on that occasion.

Amrani was a member of Saleh’s General People’s Congress who joined the opposition along with several other party members in March 2011 in protest over a deadly crackdown on anti-regime protests by the President’s loyalists.

The January attack was the first on a government official since a unity government was formed on December 7 under the Gulf-brokered power transfer deal that gave an equal number of seats to the GPC and opposition.

At the time of the first assassination bid Saleh was in the United States for medical treatment after being seriously wounded in a bombing at the presidential palace in Sanaa in June 2011.

Hollande’s bodyguards forget guns on Rio trip.

Image

In a highly embarrassing Inspector Clouseau-style blunder, the presidential guards from the elite GSPR unit only realised the guns were absent upon arrival at Rio de Janeiro Airport.

They usually travel with a secured briefcase containing an array of firearms. But when they sought to present the weapons to customs officials, they were nowhere to be seen.

“They searched the (presidential) Airbus with a fine tooth comb, to no avail,” according to French satirical weekly Le Canard Enchaîné. It later transpired the guns had been left at the Elysée Palace in Paris.

This meant that for the duration of the trip, the bodyguards’ only means of protecting the French president were their “bare hands”, Le Canard reported. “In police memory, it’s a first,” one elite officer was cited as saying.

The bodyguard in charge of the weapons was soon identified and fired from the unit because he reportedly tried to blame the neglect on somebody else.

Government spokeswoman Najat Vallaud-Belkacem said: “A bag of guns did indeed remain at the Elysée. It’s true it was left behind, it’s true it was considered a serious fault on the part of the officer in charge and so his division commander fired him upon his return,” she said.

But she denied the president’s entire protection unit was unarmed during the trip, saying the bodyguards carried “replacement guns”.

Ironically, before the incident, Mr Hollande’s bodyguards had complained to French media that he was making their life hell by wanting to remain at all costs a “normal” president close to the people, even if that meant compromising his own security.

They were unhappy with his snap decision to take the train to a recent Brussels summit and return to Paris by car, insisting on stopping at all traffic lights. His penchant for shaking hands and posing with well wishers had them in a cold sweat, it was reported.

“He hasn’t taken the measure of the weight of constraints of a head of state,” one told Le Parisien. “If he continues like that, we’re heading for a catastrophe.”

Former Jeffs bodyguard wins lawsuit by default

ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — A former bodyguard and spokesman for imprisoned polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs has won a multimillion-dollar judgment stemming from his lawsuit against church leaders.

William “Willie” Jessop, in his 5th District Court suit filed in February, claims leaders of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ruined his business and harassed his family after he had a falling-out with Jeffs. He seeks more than $57 million in damages and $25 million in punitive damages.

The complaint names imprisoned sect leader Jeffs, his brother Lyle Jeffs, his brother-in-law John Wayman and two dozen other people or organizations who allegedly worked to arrange a burglary at Jessop’s Hildale-area excavation business and ranch. The suit also claims church leaders have harassed his family and kept them under 24-hour surveillance, and expelled his children from FLDS schools.

Monday’s ruling by Judge G. Rand Beacham found two of the defendants, Lyle Jeffs and Wayman, liable for some damages because they failed to respond to a court summons and therefore lost the case by default, The Spectrum of St. George reported.

Attorney Mark James, who represents Jessop and his R&W Excavation Inc. and Boulder Mountain Group Ranch companies, said the judgment allows him to pursue the collection from the two of nearly $30 million specifically addressed by the court.

He said he may try to force Lyle Jeffs and Wayman to testify about their assets. The judgment against the two awards $26 million to R&W Excavation, more than $1 million to Boulder Mountain Group Ranch and more than $2.4 to Jessop as an individual.

“There is a gap between having a judgment and having the money in hand. We have to collect,” James told The Spectrum.

Beacham’s judgment notes that a ruling on punitive damages will not be made until a hearing on the evidence can be held. No date for a new hearing has been set.

James said Warren Jeffs and other defendants named in the suit — an FLDS business entity named NewEra Manufacturing Inc. and numerous John Does who allegedly took part in acts against Jessop’s family under FLDS leaders’ direction — have not yet been served with a court summons.

“We’re trying to do this in an orderly fashion,” he said, adding he expects Warren Jeffs to be served in the near future.

Warren Jeffs is serving a life sentence in a Texas prison after being found guilty last year of child sexual assault.

The suit states Jessop had supported Warren Jeffs until he became convinced of claims that Jeffs was having affairs with other men’s wives, and had renounced his role as the faith’s prophet.

Jessop was expelled from the church and ordered to leave his home and family in 2011.

According to the suit, that was because he had refused to file a false letter defending Jeffs against allegations he trafficked and married 12- and 13-year-old girls from an FLDS settlement in Canada.

Jessop says when he refused to say his expulsion from the church was the will of God, FLDS leaders raided his R&W Excavating and removed computers and other electronic devices.

“Records of job costing, site plans, scope of work descriptions, invoicing, receivables and payables were lost,” the suit states. “Virtually all information relating to R&W’s long-term and day-to-day operations was stolen, directly and foreseeably resulting in the shut-down and demise of R&W.”

Jessop said the business was also crippled by a mass employee exodus after FLDS leaders told workers they would be excommunicated from the church if they kept their jobs.

The church is based on the Utah-Arizona line.

Billionaire Security: Behind the scenes with Warren Buffett’s Bodyguard.

Warren Buffett’s bodyguard punched me in the head, and it hurt.

The bodyguard, Dan Clark, didn’t mean for it to hurt, he was just demonstrating a fighting move called the brachial stun. That’s a strike to the side of the neck using a chopping motion with the hands — but when Clark hit me with it in a slow speed demonstration, the sudden burst of force whipped my whole head to the right, crashing my teeth together so hard that I thought I would lose a filling.

That’s what Dan Clark is like — even his demonstrations are intense.

He’s the kind of guy who throws around phrases like the “muay Thai clench with a double knee strike,” and who, when he emails you to invite you to his training session, reminds you politely to bring a cup.

All of it — the gym, the training, and especially the punch — combine to send a clear message: Don’t mess with Buffett, or any of Clark’s other clients. And that’s kind of the point.

The gym we’re standing in is attached to the offices of his company, Clark International, in Omaha, Neb. Clark, with his square build and close cropped red hair, looks every inch the former Omaha police officer he once was.

But then he met Warren Buffett, the billionaire investor known as the Oracle of Omaha, and in 1995 became Buffett’s go-to guy for personal security. When you see Buffett walking the floor at his annual investor conference, Clark is usually positioned just to Buffett’s side — keeping the crowd from surging too close to the elderly billionaire, and making sure the camera crews don’t trample anybody.

Such close proximity to an icon of American business inspired an entrepreneurial instinct in Clark, so he founded his own security company. Today, Clark International provides security services for high profile people including former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and actor George Clooney, along with a list of others he declines to name.

We flew to Nebraska to spend some time with him this spring, during a two-day executive training session Clark had organized for dozens of full- and part-time security guards. Only a handful are full-time employees. The rest are contractors on call for big jobs that require more bodies on the ground.

The men — and one woman — clearly respect the man who’s training them, occasionally clobbering them, and who may just sign their next pay check. Two or three are veterans of the mixed martial arts fighting circuit. But even they call Clark “sir.”
